Charity Cake Sale: Thank you to everyone who supported the charity fundraiser in the clubhouse last Saturday morning in aid of Breast Cancer Ireland. Despite the inclement weather there was a great turnout and €855 was raised on the day with funds still coming in. It is in support of a number of local women who are taking part in the Mini Marathon in Dublin on Monday June 6th. Well done to Catherine McGowan and her committee.

Division 1: The league resumes this Saturday at 7pm with a trip to Annaduff. Best of luck to the lads.

St. Francis Ladies: The ladies lost out to Oughteragh Gaels in the park on Sunday morning on a scoreline of 2-10 to 2-08. It was a very competitive encounter and despite goals from Aine Flood & Katie Foley the visitors hung on for a slender victory.  Hard luck to Dermot, Ann, Sean & the girls.

Division 3: We had a good win over Glencar Manorhamilton on Saturday evening on a scoreline of 3-07 to 0-09. There is no Division 3 game this weekend.

U-14 Boys: The lads lost out to Fenagh St. Caillians at home last Friday and we are home to this Friday at 7pm in the park 4-12 to 2-04. No details of any fixture this week.

U-14 Girls: The girls lost out narrowly to St. Marys in Carrick last week & we host Glencar Manorhamilton in the park on Friday evening at 7pm so good luck to Ciara, Stephanie & the panel.

U-6’s, 8’s & 10’s: Coaching continues on Saturday at 10am.

Connacht Championship: The big game versus Roscommon was a big disappointment on Sunday. It’s a long wait now until the qualifiers in July.

The 5 prize winners of €20 each were: Eugene McPartland, Arigna; Delia Mann, Jamestown; Anna McGovern, Kilnagross; Helen Cullen, Drumshanbo and Joseph Gilbride, Drumkeerin. Minor League: The minor league final against Rinn Gaels is due to be played this Saturday but no details of fixture yet available. Please check with officials before the weekend. Best of luck to the lads and to managers Micky McTigue and Noel Moran. A good turnout of support would be appreciated.

Division 1: We secured a share of the spoils in Kinlough on Saturday evening against Melvin Gaels on a scoreline of 0-13 to 1-10. We trailed 0-06 to 0-01 after 10 minutes as the home side raced out of the blocks with Brian Mulvey after 5 minutes on target for us from play. We clawed our way back during the course of the half with 3 points from Brian Mulvey (1f) and a point apiece from play from Martin Raftery & James Flynn to leave the half time score 0-08 to 0-06 to the hosts. Melvin Gaels added 3 quick fire points after the break to stretch their lead to 5 points once again 0-11 to 0-06. We needed a response and a good team move resulted in Brian finding the net to get us back into contention. Martin Raftery immediately added a point from play to close the gap to the minimum after 40 minutes. The last quarter was helter skelter with Melvin Gaels missing 2 penalties in the 45th & 55th minutes & also receiving a black card. In the same period we had 2 gilt edge goal chances of our own that went a begging but points from James Flynn from play & Brian Mulvey from a free left us trailing by one with time almost up. Nicholas Moore stepped up to hit a super equalising point from play to ensure a draw. Well done to the team & management on a gutsy display and hopefully we can get back a few players back in time for the next round of games on May 7th.  The previous weekend we secured our first points of the league with a 1-15 to 1-05 victory over Dromahair. The visitors opened the scoring in the first minute with a point from play but once James Flynn opened our account on four minutes, we never looked back. Brian Mulvey clipped over 2 frees, Martin Raftery & a brace from Ciaran Mattynnsenns all from play saw us lead 0-06 to 0-01 at the end of the first quarter. Brian added a free & Sean Mulvey scored from play to stretch the lead and just before the interval, Gareth Higgins, a first half substitute making his competitive debut for the seniors struck for a goal, with a lovely composed finish. The half time score was 1-08 to 0-01 and despite a more competitive second half we added points from James Flynn (0-03), Alan Wynne, Danny Egan, Gareth Higgins & Shane Walsh a point apiece, with the visitors goal coming in the 56th minute to leave the final score 1-15 to 1-05.

Division 3: We played Eslin at home on Sunday and just came out the right side of a very entertaining encounter on a scoreline of 2-13 to 3-09. We trailed 3-04 to 2-04 at the break with our goals coming from Ciaran Walsh & Brian Beirne but after  a see saw affair Danny Egan struck the winning free at the death. Team & scorers: Neil Nolan, Colm Guckian, Andy Canning, Kevin Moran, Ciaran Mattynnsenns (0-02), Alan Kelly, Conal Gilhooley, Kevin Moran, Shane Beirne, Niall Sorohan, Ryan Higgins, Brian Beirne (1-01), Gareth Higgins, Danny Egan (0-07), Ciaran Walsh (1-03). Subs: Mark Gunning, Oisin Dwyer, Stephen Tiernan. We have no game this weekend.

St. Francis Ladies: The ladies kicked off their Division 2 league campaign with a 1-14 to 1-09 defeat against Glencar Manorhamilton. It was a positive performance with lots to build on in the coming weeks. There is no game this weekend.

U-16 League: The lads had a good win against Melvin Gaels in Kinlough last week but we lost in Ballinamore against Sean O’Heslins on Friday evening in the last round of the league. We have qualified for the semi final which has yet to be fixed. Well done to the lads on their performances & managers Fergus Moran & Noel Beirne.

U-12’s: The U-12 boys are up and running with two blitzes under their belt against Leitrim Gaels & St. Mary’s over the past couple of weeks. We are due an away game this Friday evening so good luck to the team & to Angus & Farrell. We also wish Ciaran McMorrow a speedy recovery from injury.

U-6’s, 8’s & 10’s: The boys travelled to Gortletteragh last Saturday morning for the first blitz of the year & had a very enjoyable outing. Thank you to Gortletteragh for hosting the blitz. Best Wishes: All our thoughts this week are with Alan McTigue as he recovers from the awful events of last Saturday during the Hastings Shield Final against Roscommon in Rathcline. Alan collapsed in the first half and only for immediate medical attention he received on the field, it could have been a very different outcome. It has been a traumatic few days for the McTigue Family, with Mickey, Josephine & Ciara not present at the game and getting a dreaded phonecall about unfolding events. It's hard to imagine what they've been going through but the shock for Alan's teammates & the club as a whole has been palpable. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Leitrim U-21 Team physio, Claire Hoey and her Roscommon counterpart, Conor McGowan, whose prompt actions prevented a tragedy. Special thanks also to the Rathcline GAA club who had a defibrillator on hand, the importance of which cannot be overstated and to the National Ambulance Service, the Air Corps and the staff at University College Hospital Galway for the care they offered Alan over recent days. Alan remains in hospital but is in good form and is undergoing further tests this week. We hope he will make a complete recovery and gets back to full health very soon.

U-16 Ladies County Champions: Well done to the girls who put in a great performance on Sunday in Carrick to overcome a serious challenge from Annaduff to win the county 9 a side title on a scoreline of 5-12 to 4-07. The eventual winning margin doesn’t reflect the closeness of the game which was in the balance until the last few minutes when a late scoring burst sealed victory. We had a great start when in the first attack a Roisin McGrenaghan shot was saved only for Caoimhe McGarry to follow up and finish to the net. Aoife Gilmartin & Ciara Reynolds added points from play. However Annaduff burst into life to hit 2-02 in the space of 4 minutes to lead. Ciara then struck 3 quick fire points to level matters. Annaduff pointed before an Aoife Gilmartin free left the scores level at the break. Ciara Reynolds had the first 2 points of the second half but again Annaduff had a purple patch and scored 2-01 in the next 5 minutes. Roisin McGrenaghan replied with a goal and super sub, Aine Flood, who is just back from a serious injury struck a great goal to put us a point ahead. Mairead Flood pointed and Ciara Reynolds added two more as the Annaduff goalkeeper made a number of outstanding saves to keep her side in it. Then 3 frees for Annaduff in quick succession levelled the game again and brought about a thrilling finish. Aine Flood struck another goal and Caoimhe McGarry added an insurance goal in injury time with the final score a long range free from the unerring Ciara Reynolds. Well done to both teams for serving up a wonderful match. Team: Danielle McManus, Shona Nugent, Eimear Gibbons, Mairead Flood (0-01), Caoimhe McGarry (2-00), Roisin McGrenaghan (1-00), Ciara Reynolds (0-09), Aoife Gilmartin (0-02), Ciara Lynch. Sincere sympathy also to the Dunne Family on the death of John Dunne in Leixlip; to the Brogan Family on the death of Paddy Brogan and finally the McTague Family, Garadice on the untimely passing of Seamus McTague who was laid to rest in Aughwillan last week. May they rest in peace.

12/10/15

Division 1:  We played the last league game of the season on Saturday in the park losing to Melvin Gaels on a scoreline of 1-08 to 1-05. Although there was nothing at stake from our side Melvin Gaels were in a relegation battle with Drumkeerin and Sean O'Heslins so it was important that the lads put in a big effort and after a rusty first half we made Melvin Gaels work hard for the points. We trailed 1-05 to 0-04 at the break our first half points coming from Brian Mulvey (2) & Nicholas Moore (2). We had nothing to show for 2 penalties early in the second half, one struck the upright and the second immediately afterwards was well saved. A point from Dylan McGowan and an Alan McTigue goal closed the gap to just a point with 7 minutes remaining but the visitors added 2 late points to win the game. Best of luck to Melvin Gaels on Sunday next in the Connacht Club against Easkey.

05/10/15

Ladies Connacht Club Intermediate Championship: St. Francis ladies lost out to Shannon Gaels last Sunday in Fenagh. We trailed by 4 points at the break but the Roscommon side ran out comfortable winners after a strong second half performance. We were hampered by the loss of several key players since the county final through injury and travel. Overall it was a great year and congratulations to the whole squad & management team of Dermot McDonagh, Ann Flood & Sean McMorrow.

U-12 Girls: The girls lost the county final on Sunday to Glencar Manorhamilton on a scoreline of 1-10 to 1-03. After overcoming Keeldra Gaels in the semi final last week hopes were high and we put in a great team performance like we have all year but were beaten by a physically stronger team. The girls should take heart from their displays all year and look forward with confidence.  Well done to Alan McKeon and Stephanie Reynolds for their work with the team.

08/09/15

St. Francis Ladies: Well done to the St. Francis Ladies who won the Intermediate Final on Sunday against Drumkeerin. The girls put in a first class team display to run out comfortable winners against a young Drumkeerin side. This makes up for some of the disappointment of losing a number of finals in recent years. It’s a great achievement to qualify for the senior grade for the first time and although it is a big challenge there is plenty of talent in the squad to make an impression next year. Congratulations to Dermot McDonagh, Sean McMorrow, Ann Flood & the squad for all their hard work during the year.

Division 1: The cancellation of the championship semi finals and the fixing of a round of league games at very short notice caused major problems last week with players having plans made on what was to be a free weekend. It’s a very long time, if ever,  that the club conceded a game but because of the number of players who had paid for tickets for the matches in Croke Park and other events, this is what happened in the game against Carrigallen on Saturday which had no bearing on league position for either side and equally importantly didn’t affect anyone else. Hopefully a lesson will be learned from this and in future more respect will be shown to club players  when decisions on fixtures are being made.

U-12 Boys: The lads kick off their campaign this week with an away game in Leitrim Village. We are home to Aughavas next Monday night at 7pm. Best of luck to Gareth, Farrell, Angus and their panel of players.

The 5 prize winners of €20 each were: Nora McKeon, Ballinaglera; Ryan Dunne McPartlin, Drumshanbo; Hazel Riley, Ballinaglera; Eadaoin NiFhlannabhee, Loch Aillinne and Bridie Flanagan, Cortober. The jackpot now stands at €3,800. Also a reminder that annual lotto tickets are available from any club officers for €85 for the year.

Wedding Bells: Congratulations to Cian Cornyn and Klara Brehony who celebrated their marriage last Friday.

Sympathy: The Club extends deepest condolences to the McKeon Family, Carrick Road and the Brennan Family, Ballinamore on the sad passing of Bernadette’s brother, Frank Brennan, last week.

24/08/15

Championship: It was a disappointing exit from the senior championship on Saturday evening at the quarter final stage as Glencar Manorhamilton were deserving winners. In the end despite a promising league campaign the loss of players to injury & travel proved too much. The junior team were defeated by Mohill on Sunday at the same stage. Well done to all the players for their efforts and to the management team of Eamonn, Martin & Kevin.

Minor Championship: The minors have one game remaining in the championship at home to Annaduff this week. Good luck to the team & management.

Lotto: There was no winner of the lotto jackpot & the numbers drawn were 05-07-16-18. The 5 prize winners of €20 each were: Una McEvoy, Ardcolum; Andrew & Hazel Riley, Ballinaglera; Padraig, Evelyn, Oisin & Matthew Gray, Highwood; Bridie Flanagan, Cortober and Peter Lynch, Derryhallow. The jackpot now stands at €3,600. Also a reminder that annual lotto tickets are available from any club officers for €85 for the year.

New Arrivals: Best wishes to Katherine and Damien Guckian on the birth of twins, Molly and Mark, last week.

Fr. Peter Burke: The Club would like to extend our sincere thanks to Fr. Burke who is leaving the parish after 21 years. Fr. Peter shared in both joyous and tragic times since 1994 and was a great friend to the club throughout his time in Drumshanbo. He will be sorely missed in the community and we wish him every success in his new ministry in Ferbane.

Sympathy: Deepest condolences are expressed to the Mullaney Family, Grattan Avenue on the sad passing of Seamus Mullaney the week before last. Seamus was a fine sportsman in this earlier years and a staunch GAA supporter. His son, Gerry, and grandsons Sean & Oisin have all represented the Club over many years. It was fitting that clubs from Sligo (Owenmore Gaels), Roscommon (St. Ronan’s) & Leitrim (Allen Gaels) formed a guard of honour at his removal.  Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.

17/08/15

10/08/15

Senior Championship: We put in a very poor display against Drumreilly on Saturday evening in Ballinamore in the last group game losing by 2-10 to 2-09. It was an abject first half performance that cost us as we trailed 2-06 to 0-02 points at one stage. An improvement after the interval saw us almost rescue the game but we are lucky to be still in the championship. Hopefully a valuable lesson will be learned as we never matched Drumreilly as they fought for their lives & reached the playoff this weekend as a result.

Junior A Championship: Well done to the lads on qualifying for the quarter finals with victory over Glencar Manorhamilton on Sunday on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-06. We led 0-06 to 0-03 at the break but Manorhamilton led after 10 minutes of the second half when they goaled. It was the youngest member of the team, Gareth Higgins, who struck 1-03 to put us on the road to the win & ensure we are in the draw for the knockout stages in two weeks time.

St. Francis Ladies: The ladies beat Drumkeerin 2-07 to 2-04 in the intermediate championship on Sunday. They will play the same opposition in the final on September 6th so good luck to the squad & management with their preparations for that big game.

Minor Championship: The championship commenced last Tuesday against St. Mary’s Bornacoola and we got off to a winning start so well done to the team & management. We play Leitrim Gaels tonight (Wednesday) in Drumshanbo at 7pm. Good luck to the lads.

U-14 Boy’s: The boys play their final match this week against St. Mary’s so best of luck to all concerned.

U-12 Girls: The girls have won two and lost one of their matches so far. We play Glencar Manorhamilton this Thursday in Manorhamilton so best of luck to Alan, Stephanie & the team.

Sponsorship: Many thanks to the McGowan Family & Westlink Coaches for sponsoring footballs in recent weeks. Their ongoing support is greatly appreciated.

13/07/15

Senior Championship: We suffered defeat in the opening round of the championship against Mohill on Saturday evening in Cloone by 1-14 to 1-07. The game was played in tough conditions and we struggled for much of the first half but had the better of the exchanges for long periods after the break. Despite trailing 1-08 to 0-04 at the interval we got right back into the game and were behind 1-10 to 1-06  going into the final quarter when the Mohill keeper spilled a Brian Mulvey shot and certainly appeared to drag the ball from a long way behind the goal line. Despite an umpire indicating a goal play was allowed to continue & no score recorded which is not what you expect to happen in a senior championship tie. Although it probably wouldn’t have altered the result as Mohill finished the game well it definitely affected the margin of victory which could yet prove crucial. Well done to the team as we are stretched for numbers at the moment but we will hopefully get stronger as the group progresses.

Junior A Championship: We play Annaduff in Cloone on Saturday evening at 7:30pm. Best of luck to the team & management.

U-12 Boy’s: The boys suffered a heartbreaking loss to Mohill in the Shield Final on Saturday on a scoreline of 3-10 to 5-05. The team played some great stuff and made a stirring comeback only to get pipped by a goal in injury time. Well done to the players on their efforts all year & also to Gareth, Angus & Farrell for their work with the team.

Kellogg’s GAA Cul Camp: The Kellogg’s GAA Cul Camp takes place in the park this week and once again there has been a great turnout from Drumshanbo and the surrounding parishes with over 160 children taking part. This is up again on last year’s figure and we hope the weather improves for the duration.

U-6’s, 8’s & 10’s: Coaching takes a break for the next couple of Saturdays with the Cul Camp on this week.

Leitrim Ladies: Well done to the Leitrim Ladies on their victory over Sligo on Sunday.

Lotto: There was no winner of the lotto jackpot & the numbers drawn were 04-22-23-24. The 5 prize winners of €20 each were: James Gilchrist, Leitrim Village; Thomas Lynch, Arigna; Margaret McPartland; Drumshanbo; Jerome Quinn, Aughawillan and Pat Gallagher, Dristernan. The jackpot now stands at €3,000. Also a reminder that annual lotto tickets are available from any club officers for €85 for the year.

Wedding Bells: Congratulations to Annette Reynolds & Barry Prior who celebrated their big day last Friday. We wish them every happiness together.

06/07/15

Division 1: A very good team performance saw the lads pick up 2 more league points with victory over Aughawillan on Saturday in the park on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-10. From the throw in we were on form and James Flynn, outstanding all evening, had 3 points on the board (2 frees) in the first 5 minutes. Morgan Quinn pointed a free for the visitors before a terrific penalty save from Diarmaid McKiernan kept us ahead after 12 minutes. Ciaran Walsh on his senior debut split the posts in reply. Morgan Quinn added another free but Alan McTigue cancelled that out with a great long range effort. James Flynn from play & a 45 from Diarmaid stretched the lead but two more Morgan Quinn frees kept Aughawillan in touch. The final score of the half went to Ciaran Walsh to leave us ahead 0-08 to 0-04 at the interval. Pearce Dolan opened the scoring after the break in the 35th minute but a James Flynn free kept us 4 up. Shane Flanagan added 2 points for the visitors to close the gap but James Flynn hit a beauty from play to edge us clear once again. Another Flanagan point suggested a comeback but Sean Mulvey & Ciaran Walsh both struck from play in response. James Flynn hit his seventh point of the game in the closing stages with Pearce Dolan & Shane Flanagan making it 0-13 to 010 with time almost up. In the last play of the match Dylan McGowan broke clear of the defence and struck an emphatic goal to end the contest. Despite missing a number of regular starters the team showed a great attitude and with Kevin Moran & Ciaran Walsh impressing in their first senior outing we face into the championship next weekend in a positive frame of mind. Best of luck to the team and to Eamonn, Martin & Kevin as we face Mohill in Cloone on Saturday evening at 7:30pm.

Division 3: The league concluded on Sunday as we received a walkover in the final fixture. The team maintained league status and despite struggling at times in this division never failed to fulfil their fixtures. Well done to the team and management on their efforts and it has to be said that Division 3 was blighted this year with concessions. For some players these are only games they get so to see so many games conceded is very disappointing.

Leo Kenny Cup: We were unlucky to lose out to Elphin away on Wednesday last on a scoreline of 1-13 to 2-07 in the Leo Kenny Cup. Well done to the lads on their performance which they carried into the league match on Saturday.

The jackpot now stands at €2,900. Also a reminder that annual lotto tickets are available from any club officers for €85 for the year.

Feile: The U-14 Boys played in Feile last weekend in what was a great experience for all concerned. We were based in Ashford Co. Wicklow where the home club Ashford GAA were wonderful hosts giving all the lads a memorable few days in the Garden County. We played 4 matches over the weekend against opposition from Wexford, Longford & Wicklow eventually losing a Shield Quarter Final to St. Mary’s of Wexford. A couple of injuries prior to the tournament had a big bearing on performances but the lads put in a great effort and will always remember the trip thanks to the host families & local club. A big thank you to John Moran and Gareth Smith for mentoring the team, also to Dara Lynch and Ann Flood for travelling with the group and a special thanks to Gerry Gallagher for getting everyone there and back safely.

Deal or no Deal Event: Well done to everyone involved in the Deal or no Deal fundraiser held on Saturday evening in the Lough Allen Hotel. This was a very novel event based on the popular TV Show ‘Deal or no Deal’ and provided great entertainment on the night & was very successful for the Club into the bargain. Congratulations to Martin McGowan and his hard working committee of Neil Nolan, Enda McGloin, Noel Beirne, John Nolan, Seamus Heron & Gareth Smith. A special thank you to Kevin Blessing who was our host for proceedings and he did a wonderful job and also to Paul Gibbons for his help. The Club is especially grateful to our main sponsors The Layden Group, Dublin, Gibbons’ Centra Drumshanbo and the Lough Allen Hotel.

Division 1: We secured an important win away to Aughnasheelin on Saturday evening on a scoreline of 2-09 to 0-10. It was a very well contested match which was decided by  2 excellent second half goals from Dylan McGowan & Thomas Mulvey and some outstanding goal keeping from Diarmaid McKiernan. We opened the scoring with a free from Brian Mulvey and a lovely long range point from play from Dylan McGowan in the first 5 minutes. Barry McWeeney from a placed ball & Gavin Sammon from play tied the game for the home side. Brian Mulvey pointed another free before Aughnasheelin had their best spell with 3 Fintan Fitzpatrick points (2 frees) edging them ahead. Thomas Mulvey & Dylan McGowan pointed just before the interval but a late Fitzpatrick point left Aughnasheelin leading 0-06 to 0-05 at the break.  We dominated the opening stages of the second half with 2 Brian Mulvey frees putting us ahead. Then Dylan McGowan continued his recent goal scoring form with a decisive finish after a good move on 44 minutes after Diarmaid was called on to make a couple of great saves. Gavin Sammon & Wayne Gilgunn from play cut the deficit to 2. The half time introduction of Martin Beirne, sidelined for over 6 months with injury, was a welcome boost and Martin made a big impact with 2 lovely points from play to steady the ship. Another Fitzpatrick free kept Aughnasheelin in contention but in the 53rd minute Thomas Mulvey was on the end of another good team move and made no mistake finding the net with a great finish. Fintan Fitzpatrick completed the scoring from a placed ball to leave the final tally 2-09 to 0-10.  We have a break now for a few weeks before the championship commences.

Division 1: We picked up a valuable brace of league points with a good win over Gortletteragh at home on Saturday evening on a scoreline of 4-12 to 2-09. Sean Mulvey opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a fisted point before the visitors hit back immediately. James Flynn cut through the visitor’s defence on 8 minutes & hit a great goal to settle the side. Gortletteragh replied with a point but a pair of Brian Mulvey frees extended the lead. In the 15th minute Thomas Mulvey got on the end of a good move and struck an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net to put us in control. Both sides hit 3 points apiece before the break with our scores from Brian (2) and Sean Mulvey to leave the interval score 2-06 to 0-05.  Brian was on the mark again in the opening minute of the second period with a point from play and in the 33rd minute a great team move was finished to the net by Dylan McGowan. Dylan, Thomas Mulvey & James Flynn all added points from play with the visitors adding 2 frees as the game entered the closing stages. In the 53rd minute Brian Mulvey converted a penalty for our fourth goal. Gortletteragh to their credit rallied in the last 5 minutes and scored 2-02 but Brian from a placed ball and Thomas from play completing the scoring. We wish Sean Mulvey a speedy recovery after picking up a nasty leg injury during the second half. We play Aughnasheelin away on Saturday evening at 7pm.

U-16 Boys County Champions: Well done to the U-16 lads and management team as we won the 13 aside League Final on Friday evening in Carrick with a 3-11 to 1-03 victory over Aughavas. We started slowly and conceded a goal very early on but once Colin Moran found the net just before the break we never looked back. Second have goals from Fergal Moran & Fergal Gilmartin were the icing on the cake and though Aughavas tried valiantly throughout we finished the stronger side. There were great celebrations as captain Shane McGrenaghan accepted the cup. Thank you to everyone who helped out in the clubhouse afterwards and congratulations to the team and managers Fergus Moran & Noel Beirne.

Division 1: We were beaten by St. Mary’s in Carrick on Saturday evening on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-07. The game was played in difficult conditions and we led 2 pts to no score with Brian Mulvey & Dylan McGowan on target from play in the opening 10 minutes. The home side got off the mark on 16  minutes with an Alan Doherty free but Martin Raftery replied from play almost immediately. Carrick had the better of the exchanges for the remainder of the half with 3 more Doherty frees and 2 points from play by Conor & Daire Farrell to lead 0-06 to 0-03 at the break. Both sides missed chances in the early stages of the second half but we made a breakthrough in the 40th minute when Dylan McGowan found the net after a lovely pass from Shane Walsh. We followed this with 2 quick fire points from play from Brian & Thomas Mulvey to lead heading into the final quarter. St. Mary’s were now dominating possession and had points from Robbie Lowe, James McGrail, Brian O’Donnell & another Doherty free to lead with time running out. Brian Mulvey pointed a free to leave just a point between the sides with a couple of minutes left on the clock. The home side had a break when a Clement Cunniffe shot hit the upright and fell perfectly for McGrail to find the net for a killer score. We worked a goal chance of our own straight away when Brian Mulvey hit a rasper that was tipped over by the keeper for our final point in the 59th minute. McGrail hit the last score in injury time on a breakaway. We weren’t far away again but need to convert more scoring chances to get something from these games. 04/05/15

Division 1: We lost out to Drumkeerin on Saturday evening  in the park on a scoreline of 2-06 to 1-04. After a number of good performances in recent weeks we never got to grips with the difficult conditions on Saturday & this was a game to forget. The visitors on the other hand totally dominated the first half and playing with the elements led at the break 2-02 to no score, the goals coming from a goal mouth scramble & a penalty. The only notable aspect of the opening period from our point of view was the loss of Thomas Mulvey to a black card. We eventually got going early in the second half and hit 4 points in 5 minutes through Brian Mulvey, Martin Raftery, Danny Egan & Nicholas Moore. We had a bit of momentum at this stage and had what seemed a perfectly good goal disallowed after an umpire’s decision. Brian Mulvey did find the net with time running out but we never looked like getting on terms with a Drumkeerin side who worked their socks off for a deserved victory. We have a break now for county action and the league will resume in three weeks.

Division 3: The second team play Aughavas at home on Saturday evening at 7pm.

27/04/15

Division 1: We recorded our first defeat of the league on Saturday evening in the Bee Park losing to Glencar Manorhamilton on a scoreline of 2-14 to 2-08. We competed really well and the game was closer than the scoreline suggests. We trailed by a point at half time and with two minutes remaining there was just two points between the sides but a late scoring burst from the home side secured the points. Brian Mulvey & Nicholas Moore both pointed from play in the opening 10 minutes in reply to points from Adrian Croal & James Glancy. We then hit the front when Dylan McGowan finished a high ball to the net on 15 minutes. In the 20th minute we suffered a blow when losing Alan Wynne to injury when he was performing well in the middle of the park. After a long stoppage Manor then hit 3 unanswered points through Croal, Michael Poniard & Darren Sweeney. Diarmaid McKiernan also made a great save to keep the sides level. Nicholas hit a free and Thomas Mulvey flashed a pointed that clipped the crossbar. Manor finished the half well with points from Conor Dolan, Ronan Flynn & Adrian Croal to leave the interval score 0-08 to 1-04. Conor Dolan & Nicholas swapped frees and James Glancy had one from play with Nicholas doing likewise to leave the minimum between the sides after 45 minutes. Then Ronan Flynn goaled to give the home side breathing space and Darren Sweeney pointed a 45. Then with 10 minutes to go Alan McTigue rattled home a terrific goal to put us right back in it but Darren Sweeney pointed almost immediately. Nicholas added a free and with time running out we pushed hard for scores but the experience & know how of the home side saw a Niall Brady goal in the 58th minute close out the game. Conor Dolan & James Glancy added points in injury time with Nicholas replying leaving 6 between the sides at the final whistle. We wish Danny Egan, Alan Wynne & Shane Walsh speedy recoveries from injury. We play Drumkeerin on Saturday evening at 7pm in the Park. Good luck to all concerned.

Division 3: The second team played Eslin away on Sunday and were well beaten despite a spirited performance.

Also a reminder that annual lotto tickets are available from any club officers for €85 for the year.

Club Night: The club hosted the Annual Awards Night in the Lough Allen Hotel on Saturday last and it was a wonderful evening of celebration & reminiscing where in addition to the Kevin Keane Player of the Year Awards, three former championship winning teams were honoured including the 1963 Junior Champions, the 1987 Junior Champions and 1989 Intermediate Champions. Congratulations to the following very deserving award winners: Senior Player of the Year – David Wynne; Junior Player of the Year – Jason Loftus and St. Francis Ladies Player of the Year – Ciara McPartland. It was lovely to see the 1963 team all looking so well and the then captain, Sean Lynch, gave a passionate speech a outlining the importance of that success in the development of the club. Former Leitrim great, Joe Layden, also a key member of that team, spoke of the camaraderie of playing football and paid a touching tribute to Tony McGowan. The team were presented with mementoes as both Sean & Joe remembered those team members who have passed to their eternal reward. Team manager in 1987, Frank McKeon, presented a photo to each of the 1987 panel and Sean Wynne did likewise with the 1989 team. Division 1: We picked up a second league win on Saturday evening with a hard fought victory over Dromahair in the park on a scoreline of 1-08 to 010. It was a very entertaining match with great scores on both sides and an exciting finish as we held off a late rally to secure the points. Kevin Conlon opened the scoring for the visitors in the 6th minute with a 45 into the strong breeze before we found our range with 2 excellent Brian Mulvey scores from play. Shane Walsh then picked up a break and whipped over a point to extend the lead. In the 10th minute Kevin Conlon replied with an effort from play before a Brian Mulvey free doubled our lead. Alan McTigue then hit a super point with the outside of the boot on 15 minutes but points from play from Jamie & Kevin Conlon kept Dromahair in touch. Martin Raftery and Brian Mulvey both pointed but 2 late points from Paddy McGowan & Cian Clinton left just the minimum between the sides at the break as we led 0-07 to 0-06. We lost Shane Walsh to injury at the interval and he was replaced by Sean Mulvey. Both sides missed reasonable chances in the opening 10 minutes of the second half before Gary Fowley levelled the game. Kevin Conlon put the visitors ahead on 42 minutes as we struggled for scores. Then came a decisive moment when Thomas Mulvey crashed home a goal in the 49th minute after quick thinking from his brother Brian. Stephen Smith replied for Dromahair and in the 53rd minute James Flynn hit a long range point for our last score of the game. Kevin Conlon pointed a free with time running out and our defence held firm as the game finished 1-08 to 010. We wish Danny Egan, Nicholas Moore & Shane Walsh speedy recoveries from recent injuries. We started well with a couple of points from Nicholas Moore in the opening 5 minutes but the home side replied through Wayne McKeon (2) and Shane Moran to lead after 10 minutes. Nicholas added 2 frees and a Luke Murphy free for Ballinamore left the scores tied. As O’Heslins added another point Alan Wynne expertly finished for the game’s only goal on 22 minutes after great work by Shane Walsh. Wayne McKeon & Nicholas Moore swapped points to leave the half time score 0-06 to 1-05. After soaking up some pressure Brian Mulvey hit a great score to extend the lead. A Luke Murphy free and a point from play narrowed the gap but points from Shane Walsh, Nicholas Moore & Brian Mulvey gave us a nice cushion. With time almost up there was a long stoppage and when play resumed Wayne McKeon hit the last score in injury time. Well done to the team and to Eamonn, Martin & Kevin. We host Dromahair on Saturday evening at 7pm in the park.

Tony McGowan Run: The 3rd Annual Tony McGowan Road race was held on February 15th and was a great success with almost 400 runners and walkers enjoying this fun and family based event. This year had the added bonus of a 2.5k event in addition to the usual 5k and 10k races. Indeed the shorter race proved very popular among our younger up-and-coming athletes and in this regard we would like to congratulate the newly re-formed Drumshanbo Athletics Club for their great work in coaching these athletes and working on this year’s event. The 5k and 10k were very keenly contested races with the following winners; 10k Men’s – 1 Eddie Newman, 2 Kevin Ward and 3 Andrew Duffy. Over40's Kevin Martin and over 50's Joe Stagg. 10K Women’s 1 Lucy Brennan, 2 Monica Henry and 3 Lorraine Hosey. Over 40's Linda Walsh and over 50's Margaret Keaveney. Winners; 5k Men’s Diarmuid MacThiarnain 2. Donal Kennedy 3 Padraig Hackett. 5k Women’s 1 Andrea Gilmartin 2. Regina Foley 3. Sharon Doherty. It was great to see so many Allen Gaels club members compete and we had a new winner of the Gerry Keane perpetual trophy with Ciaran Gilhooly pipping last year’s winner Tadhg Moran on the home stretch. This event would not have been possible without the enormous help from all our volunteers and sponsors. To all those who made sandwiches, marshalled or assisted in any way on the day a big thank you. To MC Kevin Blessing and official starter John O'Mahony a special word of thanks. Without generous sponsor the event could not be run or make financial contributions to 2 organisations from this year’s event. This year’s funds are being donated to Childhood Days and also into a project fund to help the athletics club develop training facilities. This year’s sponsors were McGuire Cottages/Jinny’s Bakery, Lough Allen Hotel, Kilronan Castle, Aura Leisure Centre, Cara Pharmacy, CK Signs, Scollan’s Gala, Gibbons Centra, Joe Gunning, Lucozade Ireland, Cromlech Lodge, Dermot & Jacqui McDonagh. The Tony McGowan road race is now becoming a well established event on the local sporting calendar and that is the best compliment to the late Tony. So remember for next year that Valentines Weekend is about love and ...running.

Sympathy: The Club extends deepest condolences to the Guckian Family, Shannon Lodge, Carrick-on-Shannon and the McGowan Family, Drumshanbo on the sad passing of Patsy Guckian last week. For many underage players in this club Patsy was a very familiar figure who patrolled the sidelines for countless St. Mary’s teams in an era of unprecedented success for the county town in the 1980’s & early ‘90’s. Indeed much of the success of both clubs in subsequent years at adult level was forged in epic matches in that period which raised playing standards, with Patsy central to it all. He is survived by his wife Gladys, sons Pat and Brendan, daughters Aine & Michelle. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam. The Club also extends deepest sympathy to the Mc Govern Family, Kilmaghera & Cornaroy on the passing of John James McGovern in England last week. May he rest in peace.

U-16 Girls: Congratulations to our U-16 girls who won the 9 aside championship on Sunday in Leitrim Village defeating Drumkeerin 5-16 to 2-09. The scoreline doesn’t do justice to Drumkeerin’s efforts in the match and it was a tight affair until we hit a scoring purple patch in the closing stages. The girls overcame Annaduff during the week in the semi final and completed the job with this great win where they had to work hard before letting their skill come to the fore and added some terrific scores to clinch victory and see captain Dara Morahan collect the cup. Well done to the full panel of Niamh Mulvey, Aoife Gilmartin, Mairead Flood, Eimear Gibbons, Roisin McGrenaghan, Aine Flood, Heather Moore, Dara Morahan, Ciara Reynolds, Nicole McGarry, Caoimhe McGarry, Shona Nugent, Niamh Geoghegan, Leah Flynn, Megan Moran. Many thanks to Dermot McDonagh & Ann Flood for their efforts with the team all year. A special thank you to all who helped to cater in the clubhouse afterwards and finally happy birthday to goalkeeper Niamh Mulvey who celebrated her big day on Sunday in style.

Division 2 League Final: The lads were defeated by Carrigallen in the league final on Saturday in Ballinamore on a scoreline of 1-07 to 0-06. It was a tense & dour game, typical end of season fare and unfortunately the lack of a competitive outing since September 6th in the championship proved a big handicap as we were rusty and never performed as we can. Carrigallen got the all important goal in the first half and got bodies behind the ball and played on the break and we can have no complaints about the final result. Although it would have been nice to lift the cup on Saturday, the year was a  success with promotion back to Division 1 and a good championship run. Well done to all the players for their efforts all year and a big thank you to the management team of Paddy, Fergus & Noel. We wish Martin Beirne a full & speedy recovery from illness and it was good to see Martin at the match on Saturday even if only as a supporter.

U-16 Boys: The lads lost out to a late rally from Dromahair on Sunday evening in the park on a scoreline of 4-06 to 3-14. All Ireland Champion: Well done to senior team captain, Martin Raftery, on becoming All Ireland Junior Singles Handball Champion by defeating Paul Lambert of Wexford on Saturday in the Na Fianna Club in Dublin. Martin outlasted his opponent in a gruelling 2 & a half hour marathon match 16-21; 21-17; 21-19 to claim the title and to move on to the intermediate grade next year. This is Martin’s third All Ireland crown but his first in singles and congratulations to him on an outstanding achievement.

It was a game when nothing went right and the loss of Ciara McPartland early on to a serious shoulder injury set the tone for a disappointing evening. Oughteragh were clinical in their finishing and seemed to punish every mistake. We wish them well in the senior grade next year.  We also wish Ciara a full and speedy recovery. We led at half time 2-05 to 0-03 and remarkably failed to register a score in the second period with a late, late goal costing us a place in the junior final. Championship: Our championship run came to an end against Aughawillan in the senior semi final on Saturday in Pairc Sean on a scoreline of 0-16 to 1-09. We played really well in the opening half and should probably have a had a few more scores on the board leading by 1-05 to 0-06. Aughawillan got a grip of the middle of the park in the second half & we struggled to create enough chances to push on for victory. Well done to the panel and management team of Paddy Higgins, Noel Beirne & Fergus Moran.

The lads showed great character and no little skill to overturn a defeat by the same opposition earlier in the summer. It was end to end stuff with both teams providing a great advertisement for underage football. Well done to the whole panel of players and managers Patrick McManus & Stephen Flynn.

Division 2: Congratulations to the team & management on securing promotion to Division 1 last weekend. Our 1-13 to 0-05 victory away to Cloone on Saturday evening coupled with other results leaves us 5 points clear of third place with just 2 games remaining which guarantees our place in the league final. Division 2: We played a good old fashioned derby match against Ballinaglera on Saturday evening in front of a big crowd in the park. Playing with the breeze in the first half we started well & had points from Brian Mulvey, Danny Egan (2) and Alan Wynne in the opening 10 minutes. James Flynn added a point before Enda McGuire opened Ballinaglera’s account on 12 minutes. Nicholas Moore & Enda McGuire swapped points before Damian McGourty pointed for the visitors leaving it 0-06 to 0-03 after 20 minutes. Martin Raftery struck from play & Danny Egan slotted over a free to extend the lead. James Flynn then hit 2 lovely points from play in the 24th & 27th minutes as Enda McGuire with a free had the last score of the half to leave us leading 0-10 to 0-04 at the break. Ballinaglera opened brightly in the second period with the aid of the breeze pointing through Enda McGuire, Colm Maguire & Seamie McMorrow (2) to reduce the deficit. We then struck for a goal when Shane Beirne was on hand to scramble home. Anton McGourty replied with a point for the visitors but Nicholas Moore shot 3 quick fire points to put us in control again with 15 minutes remaining. However Ballinaglera were now dominant in the middle of the field and staged a recovery with Fergal Wynne pointing from play and Seamie McMorrow converting a penalty to narrow the gap. Danny Egan pointed a free on 54 minutes for our last score. Ballinaglera added points immediately from Padraig Clark & Fergal Wynne. Fergal Wynne then kicked a long range free in the last minute for the final score of the match. According to my notes & other spectators we had a point to spare but the only scoreline that mattered was that of the referee who had it level at 1-13 apiece. The game should benefit both teams with the championship just around the corner.

Leo Kenny Cup: We had a good win over Drumkeerin last Tuesday evening in Drumkeerin on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-07 and now meet Corofin in the semi final on Tuesday (22nd) in Ballyhaunis. Good luck to the team and management.
