Outgoing chairman Paddy Higgins presided over the meeting and gave an overview of the year in his address. He complimented the minor, U-14 & U-12 boys and U-14 & U-16 girls along with their managers who all won county titles. He congratulated the senior team & management on securing promotion to Division 1 and a good championship run. Secretary, Padraig Kenny, gave a comprehensive report of the club’s activities in 2014 and thanked all those who contributed to the efficient running of the club. He outlined the performance of all teams from U-6 to senior and covered all club issues in the last 12 months. He paid warm tribute to former president Tim Mannion who passed away this year. U-21 Championship: The U-21’s began their campaign last Saturday against Fenagh/Gortletteragh in Fenagh and lost out 1-14 to 1-08. The final score doesn’t do justice to the team’s efforts over the hour and a few late points by the home side put a gloss on the scoreline. We play Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins this Saturday in Drumshanbo at 3pm. Best of luck to the panel and management of Noel Moran & Seamie McMorrow.

20/10/14

U-16 Girls: Congratulations to our U-16 girls who won the 9 aside championship on Sunday in Leitrim Village defeating Drumkeerin 5-16 to 2-09. The scoreline doesn’t do justice to Drumkeerin’s efforts in the match and it was a tight affair until we hit a scoring purple patch in the closing stages. The girls overcame Annaduff during the week in the semi final and completed the job with this great win where they had to work hard before letting their skill come to the fore and added some terrific scores to clinch victory and see captain Dara Morahan collect the cup. Well done to the full panel of Niamh Mulvey, Aoife Gilmartin, Mairead Flood, Eimear Gibbons, Roisin McGrenaghan, Aine Flood, Heather Moore, Dara Morahan, Ciara Reynolds, Nicole McGarry, Caoimhe McGarry, Shona Nugent, Niamh Geoghegan, Leah Flynn, Megan Moran. Many thanks to Dermot McDonagh & Ann Flood for their efforts with the team all year. A special thank you to all who helped to cater in the clubhouse afterwards and finally happy birthday to goalkeeper Niamh Mulvey who celebrated her big day on Sunday in style.

Division 2 League Final: The lads were defeated by Carrigallen in the league final on Saturday in Ballinamore on a scoreline of 1-07 to 0-06. It was a tense & dour game, typical end of season fare and unfortunately the lack of a competitive outing since September 6th in the championship proved a big handicap as we were rusty and never performed as we can. Carrigallen got the all important goal in the first half and got bodies behind the ball and played on the break and we can have no complaints about the final result. Although it would have been nice to lift the cup on Saturday, the year was a  success with promotion back to Division 1 and a good championship run. Well done to all the players for their efforts all year and a big thank you to the management team of Paddy, Fergus & Noel. We wish Martin Beirne a full & speedy recovery from illness and it was good to see Martin at the match on Saturday even if only as a supporter.

U-16 Boys: The lads lost out to a late rally from Dromahair on Sunday evening in the park on a scoreline of 4-06 to 3-14. We led in the closing stages but the visitors finished stronger and emerged with the win. We have one game remaining this Saturday at home to St. Brigid’s but cannot now qualify for the final. Well done to the lads on their efforts so far and to the management team Micky & Ciara McTigue.

All Ireland Champion: Well done to senior team captain, Martin Raftery, on becoming All Ireland Junior Singles Handball Champion by defeating Paul Lambert of Wexford on Saturday in the Na Fianna Club in Dublin. Martin outlasted his opponent in a gruelling 2 & a half hour marathon match 16-21; 21-17; 21-19 to claim the title and to move on to the intermediate grade next year. This is Martin’s third All Ireland crown but his first in singles and congratulations to him on an outstanding achievement.

St. Francis Ladies: Commiserations to the ladies who were well beaten by Oughteragh Gaels in the Intermediate Final on Saturday in Cloone. It was a game when nothing went right and the loss of Ciara McPartland early on to a serious shoulder injury set the tone for a disappointing evening. Oughteragh were clinical in their finishing and seemed to punish every mistake. We wish them well in the senior grade next year.  We also wish Ciara a full and speedy recovery. Championship: Our championship run came to an end against Aughawillan in the senior semi final on Saturday in Pairc Sean on a scoreline of 0-16 to 1-09. We played really well in the opening half and should probably have a had a few more scores on the board leading by 1-05 to 0-06. Aughawillan got a grip of the middle of the park in the second half & we struggled to create enough chances to push on for victory. Despite the natural disappointment we made good progress this year with promotion to Division 1 and valuable championship experience gained for a very young team. Well done to the panel and management team of Paddy Higgins, Noel Beirne & Fergus Moran.

St. Francis Ladies: The ladies overcame Drumkeerin in a thrilling intermediate semi final on Sunday on a scoreline of 5-11 to 4-13. It was a end to end entertainment served up by both sides and sees us through to meet Oughteragh Gaels in the final so good luck the girls and management team of Eamonn McGowan, Mary Beirne, Ray Duffy & Dessy Doyle. Please check with club officials for exact details of fixture.

The lads showed great character and no little skill to overturn a defeat by the same opposition earlier in the summer. It was end to end stuff with both teams providing a great advertisement for underage football. Well done to the whole panel of players and managers Patrick McManus & Stephen Flynn.

Division 2: Congratulations to the team & management on securing promotion to Division 1 last weekend. Our 1-13 to 0-05 victory away to Cloone on Saturday evening coupled with other results leaves us 5 points clear of third place with just 2 games remaining which guarantees our place in the league final. Division 2: We played a good old fashioned derby match against Ballinaglera on Saturday evening in front of a big crowd in the park. Playing with the breeze in the first half we started well & had points from Brian Mulvey, Danny Egan (2) and Alan Wynne in the opening 10 minutes. James Flynn added a point before Enda McGuire opened Ballinaglera’s account on 12 minutes. Nicholas Moore & Enda McGuire swapped points before Damian McGourty pointed for the visitors leaving it 0-06 to 0-03 after 20 minutes. Martin Raftery struck from play & Danny Egan slotted over a free to extend the lead. James Flynn then hit 2 lovely points from play in the 24th & 27th minutes as Enda McGuire with a free had the last score of the half to leave us leading 0-10 to 0-04 at the break. Ballinaglera opened brightly in the second period with the aid of the breeze pointing through Enda McGuire, Colm Maguire & Seamie McMorrow (2) to reduce the deficit. We then struck for a goal when Shane Beirne was on hand to scramble home. Anton McGourty replied with a point for the visitors but Nicholas Moore shot 3 quick fire points to put us in control again with 15 minutes remaining. However Ballinaglera were now dominant in the middle of the field and staged a recovery with Fergal Wynne pointing from play and Seamie McMorrow converting a penalty to narrow the gap. Danny Egan pointed a free on 54 minutes for our last score. Ballinaglera added points immediately from Padraig Clark & Fergal Wynne. Fergal Wynne then kicked a long range free in the last minute for the final score of the match. According to my notes & other spectators we had a point to spare but the only scoreline that mattered was that of the referee who had it level at 1-13 apiece. The game should benefit both teams with the championship just around the corner.

Leo Kenny Cup: We had a good win over Drumkeerin last Tuesday evening in Drumkeerin on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-07 and now meet Corofin in the semi final on Tuesday (22nd) in Ballyhaunis. Good luck to the team and management.

02/06/14

Niall Higgins Tournament: The Annual Niall Higgins Tournament took place on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon in the park and it was great to see our own U-14’s emerge victorious defeating a gallant Geevagh side in the final. We played Kiltubrid in the opening game and after an exciting encounter won 1-10 to 1-02. The fine young Kiltubrid team then put it up to a physically stronger Geevagh outfit losing out 4-07 to 0-06. Unfortunately Drumkeerin were a no show on the day which meant that the Allen Gaels v Geevagh match was the Final with the home side running out winners 6-06 to 3-06. A big thank you to Kiltubrid and Geevagh for taking part and to referees Noel Heron & Cyril McKeon. Many thanks to everyone who helped out on the day especially Mary Beirne, Ann Flood, Mary Jo Monaghan, Geraldine Moran & Mairead Higgins who catered for the teams, mentors & supporters. Thanks to the Club Bord na nOg in particular Cyril McKeon, Patrick McManus, Noel Beirne & Gareth Smith for organising the event, to Hubert McCormack and of course a big thank you to the Higgins Family for their support.

Division 2: We ran out comfortable winners over Mohill’s second string on Sunday morning on a scoreline of 3-18 to 0-05. We led 2-07 to no score after 17 minutes with our goals coming from Nicholas Moore & Shane Walsh. It was 2-11 to 0-02 at the break and we added 1-07 in the second period to secure a brace of league points. It’s hard to read too much into this performance but it was pleasing that 3-16 was scored from play in the last league game before the championship however it was very disappointing to see that Glencar Manorhamilton conceded their match which now means that scoring difference will not be a factor in this division. Scorers: Nicholas Moore (1-04), James Flynn (1-02), Shane Walsh (1-01), Martin Beirne (0-04), Ryan Higgins (0-03), Brian Mulvey (0-02), Alan Wynne (0-01), Martin Raftery (0-01). Division 2: We recorded an important win on Sunday morning away to Glencar Manorhamilton on a scoreline of 1-12 to 0-18. The highlight of the match was a 12 point haul from Nicholas Moore & an outstanding display from David Wynne in a very hard fought game against a strong Manor second string. It was tit for tat all through the opening half with the sides level after the first quarter 0-05 apiece our scores coming from Nicholas Moore (0-03) and Brian Mulvey (0-02). We added points from Ryan Higgins, James Flynn & Nicholas (0-02) but a goal from the home side just before the interval left it 1-07 to 0-09 at the break.  The same pattern continued in the third quarter with the sides exchanging points and we were level 1-11 to 0-14 after 50 minutes with Nicholas scoring 5 frees in that time. Manorhamilton hit the front on 53 minutes but we responded with 4 great points from play in the last 5 minutes from James Flynn, Nicholas (0-02) and Martin Beirne to take the spoils. Tim Mannion: It was with deep sadness that we learned of Tim Mannion’s passing on Friday last at the age of 87. Tim was a great community man through his involvement with Comhaltas &the Fire Brigade and a wonderful supporter of Allen Gaels throughout his lifetime where he served as club president for well over 20 years. Indeed his presidential address at the AGM was always a particular highlight. Tim played with Aughnasheelin before the club became fully established in Drumshanbo but once it did he became a key figure in the GAA in the town. He was held in great affection by young and old with his words of encouragement to players and positive attitude a breath of fresh air. This was all encapsulated in his memorable turn of phrase which always brought a smile. The Club performed a Guard of Honour at the Church on Sunday afternoon and a minute’s silence was observed before the Division 2 game on Monday as a mark of respect. To the Mannion Family we extend deepest condolences on their sad loss. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

Division 2: We overcame Dromahair on Bank Holiday Monday morning 1-08 to 0-09 in a game played in very wet & windy conditions in the park. With wind assistance in the first half we led 1-06 to 0-03 at the break with Nicholas Moore (0-03), Ryan Higgins, Martin Beirne and Martin Raftery all on target however it was a goal from Alan Wynne in the 29th minute that proved decisive. With the strong wind at their backs in the second half Dromahair dominated proceedings for long spells and it took 2 excellent saves from Diarmaid McKiernan between the posts to keep us ahead. Ryan Higgins & Thomas Mulvey scored points from play in the second period as we always stayed a few points up despite pressure from the visitors in the closing stages. Team & scorers: Diarmaid McKiernan, Kyle Flynn, Mark Gunning, Ciaran Mattynnsenns, Shane Beirne, David Wynne, Adrian Sorohan, Thomas Mulvey (0-01), Alan Wynne (1-00), Bryan Beirne, Nicholas Moore (0-03), Martin Beirne (0-01), Dylan McGowan, Ryan Higgins (0-02), Martin Raftery (0-01). Division 2: We came out the right side of a very tight encounter in Glenfarne on Saturday evening winning on a scoreline of 1-12 to 2-08. We started slowly but were level after 15 minutes thanks to three points from Danny Egan before he retired injured. We found our feet before the break and 5 points from play – a brace apiece from Nicholas Moore and Martin Beirne and one from James Flynn left us 0-08 to 0-03 in front when we conceded a soft goal on the stroke of half time to leave it 0-08 to 1-03 at the break. Glenfarne had the better of the exchanges early in the second half with a 45 from Brian Mulvey our only score as the home side kicked 3 points to level matters. We edged in front with points from Brian (2) & James Flynn and led by one when Glenfarne struck a cracking goal on 59 minutes to lead for the first time.
